Artificial intelligence and microbiome research
Prof. Georg Gerber discusses the complexities in applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to microbiome research given the highly individualized and limited data available. The lecture also introduces the case study of the microbiome interpretable temporale rule engine or MITRE, which takes the microbiome, a certain time frame, and corresponding data to be able to predict an outcome or disease and/or calculate risks or classify them according to the condition or intervention, and its results. Prof. Gerber envisions the future capabilities of AI in microbiome research but cautions against potential pitfalls. He emphasizes the importance of avoiding biases in AI training, preserving human judgment and creativity, preventing the monopolization of AI capabilities, and mitigating environmental impacts.
