Hot topics in bioactive nutrition – gangliosides - Dr. Ryan Carvalho
This talk is focused on another hot topic in the area of bioactive nutrition : gangliosides.
Gangliosides are complex molecule with a unique structure composed of a complex carbohydrate: oligosaccharide linked to sialic acid and a lipid: sphingolipid (fatty acids plus sphingosine). Breastmilk naturally contains gangliosides The two major gangliosides ones being GD3 and GM3 at an average content is approximately 11 mg/L. Their role in breastmilk is still being researched but in addition to their well documented role in cognition, they have more recently been shown to play an important role in intestinal immunity by promoting a healthy gut microbiota and preventing pathogen adherence.
